PRODUCT INFORMATION

WOCA Wood Lye is a mild, non-corrosive form of lye and the first step to whitewashing or creating a driftwood appearance on indoor wood. It also minimizes the natural occurrence of wood turning yellow over time.

WOCA Wood Lye is compatible with all wood species and is available in White and Grey. Results vary.

Finish and protect the wood surface with WOCA Master Color Oil or Diamond Oil Active to add additional color, protection and durability.

If you want to achieve the signature Scandinavian wood look, purchase one of our Signature Look bundles:

Scandinavian Wood Floor System, Diamond Oil Active

Scandinavian Wood Floor System, Master Color Oil

IMPORTANT: Due to settings and color adjustments within individual computer monitors and hand-held devices, the color on your wood may or may not be achieved as shown in the color swatches

We encourage you to order a tester and apply it to a piece of your wood for verification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is WOCA Wood Lye a bleach or a paint?

WOCA Wood Lye is neither a bleach nor a paint. It’s a primer that prevents the wood from yellowing over time and minimizes red and pink tones.

Should I apply more than 1 coat of lye?

1 coat of lye is sufficient based on the coverage rate of 250 sf per 2.5 liter container.

Why should I use a lye?

Lye is an optional pretreatment to alter the base color of the wood, accelerate patina, and create custom looks. WOCA has three types of Lyes for different wood types and accomplish different effects.

Do I need to add an oil finish or topcoat to my floors after applying the lye?

Wood Lye is not a finish, it’s a pretreatment. Lye treated wood is still unfinished wood, so yes, you will need to add an oil finish to protect the flooring after applying lye. Most customers topcoat/finish with either Diamond Oil Active or Master Color Oil in White or Extra White for that signature Scandinavian look.

Do I have to use Wood Lye?

No, you do not need to use Wood Lye or any other Lye treatments. Wood Lye is an optional pretreatment that can be used.

I have Red Oak, will the Wood Lye take away all of the red tones?

WOCA Wood Lye can take away the red tones, but it depends on many factors on your specific Red Oak. We highly recommend ordering a tester of Wood Lye and WOCA Oil to sample on your own wood.

Can I use Wood Lye on any wood species?

Wood Lye can be used on any wood species, but desired results vary.

I applied the lye and love the way it looks, but when I apply a topcoat, it changes the color?

Wood Lye by itself is not the finished look, it’s part of a process. It’s important to order tester samples of Wood Lye and WOCA Oil(s) to decide the final color and look.

What’s the difference between Wood Lye Grey and Wood Lye White?

Wood Lye Grey has gray pigment in it, and Wood Lye White has white pigment in it. The pigment in the lye can be seen in the wood grain, depending on the topcoat.

Can I use Wood Lye on Pine or should I use Softwood Lye?

Wood Lye can be used on Softwoods like Pine, it has a milder effect than WOCA Softwood Lye.
